How to be a farmer in NC?

Is there anyone that can help me with this? I live in NC & husband is a farmer. Working for someone else.?

My husband is 32 years old & a farmer & works for someone else. He will be out of work for hip surgery at the end of the month. He will be non-mobil for 3 months & 3 months of physical therapy. Is there any help we can get like disability or unemployment. He has never missed a day of work & we are worrying about how we will be able to live off my salary alone for 6 months. We have 2 small children in private school as well. Please anyone with any helpful information will be appreciated.
