What to do if I receive a fat bill from doctor / medical service provider.?
-
When I was pregnant I visited my OB doctor who accepts my insurance. She the sent me to another doctor to check my other conditions. I gave them my insurance card and the treatment took place. Now the 2nd doctor sent me a fat bill. My insurance company says he is not a participating provider and so they will not pay him. This doctor has never informed me he is not a participating provider. Now they are sending bills with 'threatening' messages like 'I will be listed into their delinquent account list', 'the case will be forwarded to a collection agency', etc In the situation is there anything I can do get this bill canceled or get a reduced bill.

Answer:
Something similar happened to me. It sucks to hear, but you are going to have to pay that bill because they WILL forward it to a collections agency (which is what happened to me) and it will RUIN your credit......that stupid bill has caused me numerous problems. Pay it off and get it out of your hair once and for all. Like I said, it sucks, but it needs to be done.

You need to be more pro-active about your insurance coverage and medical care, as it is completely your responsibility to understand what is covered by your plan, and who is a participating provider. Everyone's insurance coverage is different, and there are zillions of them out there. All patients should call their insurance company every time a treatment or test is ordered, or if they are referred to another doctor---a simple call in advance will clarify your exact coverage, provide answers to all your questions, and hopefully avoid getting a bill because the rules were not followed.
You need to very calmly and politely negotiate with them. Explain your situation and why you can't afford it, that you weren't told you were being sent out of network, etc.. Ask them if there is any way they can help you out. The longer you wait, the less likely they will help you out. They also can not threaten you although telling you your account will be sent to an agency doesn't qualify as threatening.
