What's the US adoption system like?

Will the opiate in my system affect the adoption proceedings I'm going through?

  • We had a HUGE ice storm here last week and I fell on our front porch when going outside. Well, I had some Tylenol #3's left from when I was sick last summer and took 2 of them for the pain in my back. I had to go for a physical and drug screen two days after that and they said I was positive for opiates!! WHAT THE HECK!! I am in the middle of adoption proceedings and I don't want anything to go wrong with the adoption of my nephew. I guess I'm just looking for some reassurance. Do they check the levels? There sure couldn't have been that much codeine after 2 days???? I don't even drink, let alone do drugs....I'M FREAKING OUT!

  • Answer:

The best thing for you to do is to provide an explanation of why your drug test was positive for opiates, and see what happens. But they might question why you kept the medication from last summer, and if you did not see a doctor after your fall, they might wonder why. Explain the situation to them and see what happens. There is a good chance that your positive drug test could affect the adoption. I work in a substance abuse treatment facility. Some clients do not have custody of their children due to their drug use, and are required to attend treatment and stay drug free in order to see their kids. Normally, clients whose kids are in foster care, but who have visitation rights, can not see their kids if they test positive for drugs.

If you have a lawyer go and let them know what you were told about the drug test. Take the bottle to your lawyer tell them why you took it and how many. They can check the levels and they might just have you retake a test at some random time.

It actually will affect the adoption, I'm sorry. Unless you have a prescription. You could try explaining things but it will go in your file and could affect their decision. I'm so sorry.
