I can no longer afford the health insurance premiums my work offers. What can I do?
-
I am a teacher in Texas. I just received word that my health insurance premiums are going up an enormous amount starting September 1, 2011. When I started 6 years ago, they were $449 a month for my family (2 kids). Currently they are $849 a month and will increase to almost $1100 per month! This is not due to any health care reform changes, so I am not interested in people's comments about the government. This is about having to cut the education fund offered by the state. Because of these cuts, my district is going to cover much less of our insurance premiums, thus making us responsible for more. I am curious if anyone has insurance not through your work that is affordable. I am also curious about the government insurance options. I realize that my family and I must not have any insurance for 6 months in order to qualify for government insurance. Any advice is much appreciated! Thank you :-)

Answer:
Do you have a husband? If so, insurance through his job may be a cheaper option. You could consider changing jobs to a private school, also (they aren't usually affected by state funding). As far as doing it solo, I've heard blue cross blue shield has some cheaper private plans, depending on the level of coverage you need and the general health of everyone to be put on the plan.

An Individual policy of even $849 for a family of four is high unless someone has major pre-existing conditions. Contact a local agent that works with all of the major companies in your area. The agent can help you find the best plan for your sitaution and budget. They can explain what you get and, more importantly, what you don't get with each policy. There is no charge using an agent.
Talk with others in your same situation to find out what they are doing to control the cost of medical insurance. Find out whether there are other options through your health care provider. There are other companies that carry medical insurance: Blue Cross Blue Shield, USAA (this usually requires that you or one of your parents was previously in the military), etc. Some of the same companies that provide life and homeowner insurance also provide medical coverage. Shop around for the best price with a deductible and out-of-pocket that you can afford. If you currently have coverage, it may not be necessary to wait before a new policy begins coverage.
