Should I be concerned with the amount of tylenol I have been taking the last few days?
-
I have had a SEVERE toothache the last 4 or 5 days and started taking 3 extra strength tylenol every 4 hours, with the ocassional switch to advil. Now I noticed the warning on the Tylenol bottle about not taking more than 8 in a 24 hour period, and then a friend made me even more concerned. So my question is should I be concerned about taking 9-18 extra strentgh tylenol a day for the last 4 or 5 days. I am a large guy weighing in at over 350 pounds if that matters with the way my body handles it. THanks

Answer:
Tylenol is very hard on your liver. It could make you sick or even kill you.

Acetaminophen (tylenol) can cause really bad liver problems. Acetaminophen overdose is the leading cause of acute liver failure in the United States. While some of these stem from intentional overdoses (England has placed restrictions on the number of acetaminophen pills that can be sold at one time due to suicide concerns), many are accidental. In fact, each year more than 56,000 people visit an emergency room because of acetaminophen overdoses, and 100 people die from unintentionally taking too much. i'd take anbesol and rub it on the tooth, thats what i used to do. hydrocodone can help, just don't overdo it. hope you get better, man.
You are definitely right at the upper limit if not over it. Tylenol will destroy your liver if taken in too high a dose and for too long. I hope you are not drinking any alcohol, because that makes it a lot worse. What about treating the primary cause: the toothache. That concerns me because it sounds like you aren't doing anything about it. Toothaches don't fix themselves, they only get worse. If you don't have the money, look into dental clinics in your area or arrange a payment plan with the dentist. But go!!
dont worry too much about the warnings on the label...if you look they say the maximum dosage followed by 'unless directed by a doctor'... the maximum mg you can have in tylenol (acetaminophen) in a 24 hour period is 4000 mg. the maximum mg you can have in ibuprophen in a 24 hour hour period is 3200 mg. like right now, im suffering a nasty molar toothache myself...abcessed, the doc gave me the lowest mg of penicillin EVER which didnt even touch it, and i have to wait til the 18th for it to be yanked. i took about 2200 mg of advil so far today between the hours of 8am and 11:30 pm....i do the liquid gels because they work in like 5-10 minutes. i usually pop about 4 at a time, but with the advil i do 1-2 thats how strong they are. i feel fine. im not going to take anymore today though and will just relieve any pain that sneaks back with liquid anbesol and a hot compress. tylenol dont do sh*t for a toothache...even the tylenol perks i was prescribed actually make the pain WORSE. im a 30 yr old girl, 160 pounds...if that matters.
