Cannot sleep...... believe I could have high cortisol levels at night?
-
I have been suffering from something for a very long time now......first happened when I was about 20 I am 29 now......I took some pain medicine and when I went to bed that night I was woken up by some kind of jolt or I was gasping for air I could never figure it out........well 9 years later Im about to lose my mind I can go times where I sleep but its never deep restful sleep then I will go days sometimes a week without sleeping at all where my heart just pounds all night......and everytime I open my eyes they are not tired at all I just feel wide awake in my head. Then I head off to work and feel half way decent then about 10am I feel like *** the rest of the day and look like ***. My health is fading has anyone else ever dealt with high cortisol or have any of suggestions about what im dealing with..........also ever since then any kind of medication gets me seriousely jittery and drugs like ambien and stuff does not work at all and makes me hallucinate.....I bought xanax off the street for years to help me sleep and drank alcohol.

Answer:
Were you under a lot of stress when this happened? Research Adrenal Fatigue (http://www.drlam.com/articles/adrenal_fatigue.asp) and see if this matches your symptoms. This seems to run in my family - the whole "wired and tired" thing. To start, take B vitamins, magnesium and milk thistle. B12 will really help with your fatigue. You're likely anemic too. You can ask your doctor for a cortisol, aldosterone and DHEA test. Also have your doc check your electrolytes: calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, as well as b12 and ferritin levels. Next step would be to see a naturopath.

Could well be cortisol. Cardio exercise like jogging is good at neutralizing it and is a mood booster...If medically ok for cardio, start gradually, increase gradually, dont do anything that hurts. Work upto at least 20 mins/day, 4-5 days/wk, preferrably 40 mins. Try to see a well-qualified medical doc abt this. Dont use melatonin unless medical doc ok's it.

When is the last time you took xanax? How often did you take it? It takes a very very long time to recover from what xanax does to your brain, and you can suffer insomnia for over a year while your brain heals. Alcohol just makes it worse. You may have to quit alcohol and ALL drugs, and stay off of them for a long time so your brain can heal. Consider having a sleep study done. If you have sleep apnea, you stop breathing when you sleep and your brain wakes you up, sometimes in a panic. And find a doctor or counselor that can teach you about anxiety, and how to overcome it without drugs. Go to your local library (yes, the library!) and you will find some very good books on anxiety. They will teach you what causes it, and most importantly how to deal with it, live with it, overcome it, and what drugs to use if you need drugs at all. I’ve visited with counselors, psychologists, psychiatrists, and all of them know some, but I found a couple of books from the library to be more comprehensive and have more information than any one therapist or doctor that I’ve ever visited. A lot of anxiety disorders and panic attacks can be overcome without drugs if you know how to do it.
