Are there any steps or rules to draw a DFA?

Where does a health care worker draw the line between getting it done fast and following policy and procedure?

  • In hospitals and various medical clinics, there are rules, written policy and procedure guidelines that are to be followed. Then there is the obsession with cutting treatment costs, increasing profits. The insurance companies and Medicare want to pay less and less. So some rules are broken, steps are skipped in medical treatments. Perhaps steps are skipped in the maintenance and repairs of medical equipment. Who are we to satisfy, the persons who make the rules or the ones who want to cut costs. It is ironic and a contradiction that often, they are both the same people! So do I get things done really fast to cut cost, or do I follow the rules of the State and end up working overtime?

  • Answer:

That is a tricky one, psychologically or emotionally. I am a social support worker and can definitely appreciate what you are talking about. My client would sometimes need support during the night and we are not paid to do that (only to SLEEP there at night, not to get up and work). That is just one example. It is a problem because the people that decide over her hours do not see what I see and even if they did, they would just not have the financial resources to pay for it all, I would assume. I don't know how to solve that problem properly so the best answer I have is that it all comes down to intuition- YOU need to find the right balance that will not get you into trouble (as that would help neither you nor your clients) but that will also get the maximum out of your work for your client AND not exhaust you. And what that actually means a lot of the time?! working slightly overtime, doing some stuff in your own time and leave other stuff out you know would benefit the client and hope it will be ok.
