Planning on being an RN... But Im concerned..?
-
I have been planning on getting into classes to get my LPN, and while doing that, taking online classes for getting my RN (the local college offers programs online)... I have the drive, and Im excited about getting a new, comfortable and less stressful life for my son and I. I do, however, have some concerns about the schooling. When it comes to studying, I have a bit of a problem concentrating. I feel that I have to read the words out loud so that I know Im focusing on whats in front of me, but even then, when I finish a paragraph, I look away from the book and try to remember what I just read, and sometimes, I completely forget.. That concerns me GREATLY. BUT at the same time, when I read a regular book, I can read for hours and not want to put the book down..I mean, it has been a little over 5 years since Ive been in school, so do you think that could have something to do with it? That I just need to get back into the groove of studying and doing homework? I really want this, and I really need this, and I do not want my unability to concentrate ruin a potentially great life. Did you have problems like this after being out of school for some time? Please give me any and all feedback on this matter! Im so nervous! Thank you =]

Answer:
I just graduated from High School and I was taking nursing classes my last two years. I had this problem sometimes too. I noticed that it mostly occurred on the days that I was distracted or when I was simply not interested in the subject. I found that if I tried to apply the chapter or lecture to my life, I was much more interested, also looking up things and getting a better understanding of the subject helped me.

Don't worry, you'll get use to it. But I'd be more concerned about thinking it's “less stressful”, being an RN or LPN is an very stressful job. Long hours, back breaking work (literally), and the doctor's will treat you like crap. But as long as you're aware of this then good luck.
Nursing school is stressful anyway. The material isn't something you can memorize you just have to know it. This means long hours of studying and constantly going over the material. I always kept notecards, so that any free time i had I was reading them over and over. I would read as soon as I got home, before bed, before school. Of course my notecards would increase each day with each days worth of work, but I would go over everything just to keep it in my head.
