What is an intermittent ectopic beat?

Why did EKG say "ectopic beat"?

  • I had heart surgery at age 2 for an ASD repair. I've always had a "weird" heart (palps/flutters and such). I had a stress test yesterday and the monitor (that shows your stats) kept flashing "ectopic beat" (it was on the screen probably 50% of the time). Afterwards, my cardiologist said that at a glance, all results look good and normal. Why was it saying that? What was going on? Any info would be great! Thanks!

  • Answer:

Ectopic beat means irregular beat. The beat come early and result skip a beat when it should be There are 2 kind of ectopic beat;PVC and PAC.PVC is premature ventricle contraction and Pac is premature atrial contraction. Both are commen and many times happen in normal heart.Symptoms are feel heart beat(palpitation) and feel stop beat for a while(skips beat).Sure it show up in EKG(usually pick by EKG).If need to evaluation of how the actual condition is then your cardiologist will order a 24 hour hoster monitor to record these abnormal beat. Then count the total number and check the type.
