How to get a good nights sleep with a bad cold?

My friend suffers from a bad case of Insomnia, are them some easy ways to help him get a good nights sleep?

  • He is also scared of doctors to some extent for a reasonable reason but before I make him go any way I was just curious if there is actually any methods which actually help for a good night sleep. His usual sleeping pattern is for him to go to bed at 10pm, try to get to seep, get frustrated and upset then he can get to sleep at the earliest 12pm. But there are many nights where he has no sleep and becomes very ill.

    I had the same problem for a long long time and refused to see a doctor also. I thought I could kick it into gear myself. OTC medications never helped, (I even once took 5/6 and I just got extremely high). My doctor prescribed me Ambien. I honestly believed that it wouldn't do anything, until I used it. I would do stupid stuff I barely remembered the next morning, but within 30 minutes, I was out like a light for over 7 hours. After the Ambien ran out, my sleeping schedule was able to kick into a semi normal schedule. :)

There are a couple of things you can try. The first is don't go to bed until you are tired. Don't watch tv in bed and if you can't sleep get up until you feel sleepy. If you want to take something to sleep, you can try Melatonin. It's would be in the vitamin section. It's totally natural as your body already produces some of you own, but it will help you sleep and won't make you feel groggy as other things do, such as Benedryl.

A good thing to start out doing is to turn his clock so that it doesn't face him or take it out of his room entirely so that he doesn't frustrate himself because of the time. Tell him to try not to watch a lot of tv after 8, and not to watch any at all after 9:30 if he can help it. He should start getting ready for bed (brushing his teeth, putting on pajamas) at 9 so that he has time to wind down. Tell him to sit in bed and read before he turns the lights out because it'll give him time to think before he's trying to sleep, not right in the middle of it. If he wakes up in the middle of the night, he should sit in bed with a dull lamp on and read or do homework until he feels drowsy, and if the feeling never comes, he should get out of bed and start his day. There are several techniques you can try as well as some sleep aids. Melatonin is one "natural" sleep aid that you can buy at a drug store but I would not just take it without knowing if he is allergic to any medications or not or if he is on any other medications.
