How much should 5'8 teen with big bones weight?

Is it possible to shift your bones out of place in a plaster cast for putting weight on it? DOCTORS, HELP?

  • I fractured my fibula, and only that, thank god, but I just get so tired and pissed off at my crutches that I just walk, er, limp without them sometimes, the doctors clearly told me NO weight bearing but I still do it, I know, I'm stupid for doing that, but hell, I'm in highschool, I NEED to go places, FAST, 25% of the whole day with moderate weight on it and 75% of the whole day just resting it with not so much weight on the ground, now the bone is a bit painful... Is it likely that I shifted it?

  • Answer:

It should be fine. I fractured the bottom of my fibula and part of my ankle and was on crutches for almost 3 weeks. Whenever there was a narrow hallway or a lot of stuff on the ground, I was like "screw it, I'm walking" lol. I couldn't do that for the first like week and a half because it hurt so bad but after that, I hopped/limped to wherever I needed to in hallways or messy places lol. I actually healed about a month and a half faster than I was supposed to. Which also meant I had to go back to gym sooner, which sucked lol :) But otherwise, you should be fine. If you feel something shifting or get extreme pains, then I would call a doctor, but otherwise, you should be fine. Feel better :)

Pink, I doubt that the bone has shifted while you are in a cast. What you are doing has good and bad aspects to it. The good part is that you are actually increasing the rate of bone healing. This is because of something called Wolf's Law. That states that bone grows according to the stresses that are placed upon it. So your bone will get stronger faster. Now the bad news. Placing weight on a bone before it is ready can lead to shifting and sometimes a delay in healing. Since it is your fibula which is a non-weight bearing bone I do not believe this will be the case. The only thing that you have to be careful of is inadvertent contact and slipping. The other thing is that your doctor might be a little annoyed at you for this.
