Random calf muscle spasm?

Why do I get muscle spasms?

  • Last night, I was woken up by a terrible pain in my left calf muscle. I am sure that it was a muscle spasm because the muscle in my leg was very tight and the pain was excruciating. What causes muscle spasms? How can I prevent them in the future? (My calf muscle has been hurting all day)

  • Answer:

Ouch! I hate those muscle spams! I've read that they could be a sign of dehydration. Try increasing your intake of water.

That's not a muscle spasm. Its a charlie horse. I get them in my calf muscles as well as my thighs. The pain can be extreme and you get rid of them by walking on it until it stops hurting. A charlie horse can occur if your overweight, an athlete, or have been moving around the wrong way. I get them a lot, Im an athlete. You can prevent them by stretching regularly and drinking water.

A charlie's horse is a muscle spasms, and they are very painful. I had them when I was pregnant, mostly in the morning while I was still in bed. ( common during pregnancy) I read that they happen if the muscle is over used, or if you're dehydrated, or if you have low levels of potassium and calcium. (something to do with the synapses of the nerve cells, or something like that, not sure lol) Try drinking more water, increasing your potassium and calcium intake, bananas and dairy products. Vitamen water is good too. Also when you get the spasm press down on the spot and massage it out. It hurts bad but it will go away faster like that. k hope that helps :)
