Can you put Mederma scar cream on an injury before it's healed?

I burned my neck with a curling iron a few days ago and it's beginning to heal but it's not an actual scar yet. Would putting Mederma on it now prevent it from scarring too badly? Or would that just be a waste of Mederma.
