Kate, a lot of this depends upon the type of fracture. But on average the problems most encountered are the stiffness of the joints, atrophy of the muscles, swelling of the fingers, pain, and weakness. So a lot of what one is going to experience depends upon the degree of these problems. The first thing that the therapist is going to do is evaluate the hand and wrist. They will determine the degree of mobility of the wrist, just how strong the muscles are, what kind of pain the person is in, and how much swelling there might be. Once this has been determined the course of care will be determined between what the ordering doctor wants and what the therapist finds. This could include the use of massage, range of motion movements, strengthening exercises, the use of modalities to reduce swelling and decrease pain.
