Whats wrong with my knee PLEASE ANSWER?

• 2 years ago (2010) i broke my knee, i cracked my patella and severely strained my ligaments. im a competitive cheerleader, meaning i have practice almost everyday, 2 days after my knee injury i competed on it on a saturday and then again on a sunday, it was excruciating. but i had to for my team. then i got this brace, it was about 600$ and it had dials on the sides and it was really hitech, i was supposed to wear it for like 4 months, but i wore it maybe 1 month. it has been hurting every since, ive went to physio a few times, but it doesnt help much, i havent really had time to let it heal because i have cheer so much, and its my life and passion. now my knee has gotten so bad that at the end of a simple 2 hour practice, i go home with it bruising and swelling everytime. i went to my doctor today, he told me to get xrays immediately, and he brought up surgery. what could possible be wrong with it? i need to knwo asap what you think, anything things helps

  Without the exams and x-ray it's impossible to give you a good answer. Given your history, and the fact you haven't exactly followed the directions, it's quite possible that you have damaged ligaments or even the meniscus- the pad of cartilage that pads the knee and keeps the bones apart. At this point, you may well have damaged things to the point that a surgical repair is the only option you have. If you want to keep cheerleading for a while longer, and would like to walk on that leg for the rest of your life without pain- I suggest you do what the doctor recommends and follow all the aftercare instructions. Otherwise, you could mess it up badly enough to require a partial or complete knee joint replacement- and that would end the cheerleading forever. And just so you know, those knee replacements are not lifetime things. They have to be replaced about every 10-15 years or so. So it would be smart to take care of the knee you came with.
