Is it normal for your thumb to randomly go numb?

Should I go to the doctor with a sprained thumb?

  • I do a lot tiny manual things and I'm a little afraid that if I let it be it may not heal to the previous state. A hand is a hand, it's really important. It doesn't seem too serious to me, however. Yesterday I was walking down the stairs lightly holding the rail and fell, with the way I was holding the rail my thumb was forced backwards. It hurt and got worse during the day. I have very limited range of motion, especially inwards. The passive range is bigger and nearly painless, though far from normal. It really hurts if I try to do anything requiring some strength from the thumb (turning the tap, pulling the blanket up, hooking my bra etc). It's all swollen. It hurt a lot yesterday evening, today it's better but I assume that will get worse during the day like yesterday, it already does. Does it sound like something that a doctor should have a look at, or will it be OK if I just treat it at home? I would also appreciate some tips how to bind and fixate my thumb as I have no idea.
