How do you stop swelling in your thumb?

What's wrong with my thumb!!!!??! Please help I'm really scared!!!!?

  • I broke the sesamoid bone in my thumb 8 1/2 weeks ago. I had broken the bone in half. I had a cast for 3 weeks and got it off on February 28th. I had x-rays that day and they said it was still broken. They didn't give me another cast or anything. I had x-rays a week later and it was still broken. My orthopedic doctor put me in hand therapy. I went to 4 sessions of that because I was in so much pain I would cry the whole time. So my mom said no more of that. Well my thumb has still been hurting a lot. Here's my symptoms. Swelling of hand and fingers Just a little bit of bruising on my thumb Non-stop throbbing of thumb Unable to move thumb Pain on scale 1-10 is about a 6-7 right now at other times it's a 8-9 Coldness at times on my thumb I have another appointment in a week to check on my thumb. My appointment is on April 4th. I've been icing my thumb whenever I can get to it. What do you think is wrong? Could me thumb still be broken? What will the doctors do? I know I've asked this question lots of times I just want a nice long explaining answer! So no rude answers!!

  • Answer:

It is possible that your thumb is still broken. That would not be unusual with a sesamoid bone fracture. They often require surgery but usually less invasive methods of treatment are tried first. http://www.eorthopod.com/content/sesamoid-problems
