Sore ankle help?

How do I help my ankle weakness?

  • My ankles have always been a little bit weak. When I was a gymnast in late childhood/early adolescence, they were weak. When I wasn't doing a sport, they were really, really weak. They would sprain, twist and strain all the time. I then started competitive Irish dancing and they improved significantly--even though I felt they were the weakest point of my legs, they wouldn't really sprain as much. However at the beginning of September, I fell off of my shoe while dancing and sprained my ankle. I took it easy for a bit and it improved, so I started dancing full force again and it was going well. Last week, while dancing, my ankle collapsed under me while dancing, I fell onto the ground, went into mild shock the whole shebang. Now, sometimes while walking my ankle collapses under me and I'll end up on the ground. This is all my left ankle, though I do feel my right ankle as being my weakest point of my right leg. My left foot does have a genetic deformity (bunion), so I don't know whether that's related (I apply weight to different parts of my foot subconsciously to avoid pain). I started wrapping my ankle in vet wrap (something I used to do before dancing when my ankles would twist and strain a lot), and am planning to just have it wrapped whenever I'm not asleep and seeing what it does. Any other suggestions?

Have you seen a doctor lately? If not it may be a good idea. First off, wearing a wrap all the time when you are awake may not be a great idea. It doesn't allow the muscle to work and can cause them to atrophy. After the initial injury, and it's beginning to heal, you might want to slowly decrease your dependence on the wrap. Some simple exercises for your ankle could be helpful. Sit in a chair. 1. Ankle flexion and extension. Just push your ankle forward and pull it back, like you are pumping a gas pedal. Start off with a set of 5 or 10 and then build up to a couple sets. 2. Ankle rotations. Just rotate your ankle clockwise and then counterclock wise. Again a set of 5 or 10 each. 3. Write the capital letter of the alphabet with your foot. This will allow your ankle to move in all the motions of the ankle. These should not cause pain. If they do, then hold off doing them until they don't. Working the muscles of the ankle can make it stronger. You don't need weights. Physical therapy could be really helpful for you. You can ask your physician for a referral.

Its called 'loose' ankles, and its why I could never dance like I wanted. You can do research on it when you use the right term. Do a google search.

Start taking a fish oil that says it's cold water fish. Read the label get the one without the additives. Start with two in the a.m. and two at night. On the third day go to one in the a.m. and one at night. i can explain it like this; you know what chicken and turkey legs look like when cooked? all that connective clear tissue at the end of the little bony things that aren't really bones? The fish oil will help keep them connected. My wrists and elbows as well as my feet would do this, too. Good luck.
