How can I treat tendonitis?

What can I do to releive/treat my ankle tendonitis?

  • I have always been overweight, and recently I got my weight down. Problem now is that I want to keep it down and lose more through diet and excercise, and my body is fighting me. I have what I beleive to be ankle tendonitis and it makes walking impossible. I brough and ankle brace that only seems to cut off my circulation - yeah I have pretty bad swelling. And whenever I try to walk, it really hurts. Does anyone know of other home treatment or exercises that I can do to help?

  • Answer:

It may NOT be tendinitis...or it could be that plus something like osteoarthritis, or, if you're old enough, rheumatoid arthritis. You should have an x-ray taken to make sure what's going on in there. There might even be a broken bone. (That happened to me after a skiing accident. I thought it was tendinitis but there was a bone that had snapped off and was grating on the tendon!). So, see your doctor ASAP, to find out if it really is tendinitis. Here's what I read on one site about treating tendinitis: "There are several different ways that you can treat tendonitis symptoms and the pain that is associated with it. They are as follows: Ice, cold compression therapy Wearing heel pads to reduce the strain on the tendon Exercise routine designed to strengthen the tendon Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen Ultrasound therapy Manual therapy techniques A rehabilitation program In rare cases, application of a plaster cast Include slow, sustained stretches in your exercise routine" (1) I found that alternating ice AND heat worked better than ice alone (increased blood flow). You might want to avoid walking right now! Two of my sisters are quite overweight and have this same problem. One said her doctor said to avoid weight-bearing exercises for awhile and do things like cycling (esp. stationary biking) and swimming, or floor exercises. So far, it seems to be working. She's lost at least 20 pounds and looks great. No walking involved either. Good luck to you!

Other answers

you should probably get that swelling down before you begin to do any exercises. anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen can help as well as ultrasound treatment if you do go to physical therapy, which i recommend (especially since you have a hard time walking).
