How long to heal a broken ankle?

How long does it take for a broken ankle to heal?

• I broke my ankle on one side of my foot, and cracked it on the other side of my foot.How long does it take to heal? The doctor told me not to baby it, and to walk on it, but to keep it elevated alot.. I can walk on it pretty good, but when I am outside, and step on a rock or something it hurts like heck, or when I first wake up in the morning it hurts bad, it has been 4 and a half weeks, shouldn't it be almost healed by now? I am over weight and 55 years old, I thought I would tell you that in case it makes a difference, Thank you

  I am curious as to why any doctor would tell you to walk on the ankle, and did he put you in a cast? Usually for an injury like this they put a cast on, have you keep weight off the ankle for several weeks, then gradually allow you to begin putting weight on as you walk with either a crutch or a walker until the bones have healed. Have you considered seeing another doctor ?.
