How do you know if a spider bit you?

I was bit by some kind of spider a couple nights ago. i would like to know what kind it was. what was i bit by?

  • just that a couple nights ago i was bit. during that night i did feel a prick in the side of my leg (which is where the bit is located) i woke the next morning to find that it was a swelling area. the next day it became more reddish and in center purplish red. i would like to know just what kind of spider bit me. it hurts when i walk and itches.

  • Answer:

A spider bite would likely be near healed by now, and without 'seeing' the spider, would be a wild guess. No one, not even doctors, can look at a bite, and tell 'what' did the biting. Besides bites, there are a number of skin conditions that can cause these symptoms.

Unless you saw it, no one can answer that. Not even a doctor.Antihistamines will take stop itch and remove the spot to some degree.

I just want to comment on Laura's answer. First of all, brown recluse bites really aren't that common. As their name indicates, they're not aggressive. They really only bite when you press them right against as with being stuck in clothes, shoes, etc. Also, they're only found in a small part of the US. Lastly, you contradicted yourself within your own answer. You talked about how it was definitely the brown recluse bite. Then you quoted from the article about how a lot of those bites are actually not brown recluse bites at all, but a type of staph infection. That means the article is saying that brown recluse bites are not very common and more often than not the discoloration/infection you see is caused by something else.

There's no real way to tell just from a bite. Even a doctor would have trouble identifying what really bit you. If you're concerned about it, go to the doctor. The fact that it itches is normal. Hurting when you walk sounds odd to me. I can't remember ever having pain when walking after a bite of any kind.

Brown Recluse spider bites are very common and I think that it sounds just like one. My mom and best friend have been bitten by them and both had nearly the same result. Brown Recluses are venomous and a bite does require medical treatment. If you do not have a doctor look at it and determine the exact species and possibly administer an anti-venom, you could get a serious infection. The infection could lead to gangrene, amputation, and/or possibly death. I am not saying all of this to scare you in any way and I appologize if that is the result. I just know that if you are having these issues and simple activities like 'walking' are painful, that it warrants an 'emergency' visit to your doctor as soon as possible. "Many wounds that are necrotic and diagnosed as brown recluse bites can actually be Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)"-Wikipedia. Here is a very reliable like on information about the Recluse Spider and what to do and look for when you are bitten by one. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brown_recluse_spider#Venomous_bite Please skim through it and even if you are unsure when you are finished reading it, go to your doctor so that they can certainly rule everything out. I truly hope this helps, and again, I'm sorry if I scared you with any of this info.
