What kind of bug bite is hard and swollen?

What kind of bug bite could I have?

• A few days ago I noticed a bug bite on my leg right above my ankle. I figured it was just a mosquito bite because it was very itchy, but it never really looked like a mosquito bite, if anything it looked like a flea bite but I know it wasn't a flea. Last night before bed I noticed it was starting to hurt, but I wasn't really concerned. When I woke up this morning, it hurt so much that it was hard to walk. The center of the bite is dark red and and the surrounding area for about two inches in each direction is pink, with some of the pink reaching all the way down to my ankle. Another part of the pink reaches to the right about another inch in a thin wisp. It's swollen to the same height as my ankle bone and has been getting worse all day. I live in Massachusetts, so I really have no idea what could've bitten/stung me. It's obnoxious and it's keeping me awake (which is why I'm posting this at 3:30 AM). If it's not better by tomorrow I'll probably go see my doctor, but my doctor is notorious for being as unhelpful as possible, so I thought it would be a good idea to ask on here beforehand. I don't have a way to post a picture of it, which is really inconvenient, so sorry about that. Thanks to anyone with a helpful answer.
