What to do for an infected blister on foot?

  • So, i haven't worn flipflops all winter and decided to wear some the other day. they had the plastic straps and put a horrible blister on my foot, so i took them off and started walking in the rain now the blister is infected and its dark around it and like half of my foot is red. and it hurts when i walk and its almost red going up my leg in like a line. and theres little black/brown dots around it where its red. and it hurts so bad. I Can't get to a doctor this week cause im out of town. My moms a nurse and told me to soak it in warm water with epsom salt twice a day and put neosporin on it, then a bandaid when i have shoes on, and let it breathe the rest of the time. Will this help? what else can i do?

    Neosporin does work wonders however if you have blue marks running up your leg or it's swollen more than just a tad I suggest you get to the emergency room and get a shot so that if the poison got into your system then that shot will make it go away.

Your mom is a nurse... and she's right. Putting a warm towel over top of it will help 'attract' bacteria out.

You seem to have cellulitis, caused by the wound breakdown and infection (blister). Is the blister intact, if not what if anything has been leaking out of it. If its intact and no obvious infection leave it, but if it is infected as you say and bister has a collection of pus, this may need to be lanced or the blister deroofed, as if its infected and full of pus, it is a source of ongoing infection. The topical antibiotic will surface for mild cases of cellulitis, oral or IV for worse cases. Epsom salts has been noted as an effective home remedy for cellulitis.
