What Is A "Fourth Degree" Burn?

What degree burn is this?

  • I was pushed while working today (mcdonalds) and my arm went against the fryer I was carrying. It left a burn and within 20 minutes it was already a deep red and slightly purpleish. it doesn't hurt anymore, I actually can't feel anything when I touch it. By the way, that fryer had been sitting in the vat full of boiling hot vegetable oil for at least 3 minutes before hand. so what degree burn is this? and will it scar?? Here is a picture of it, it just happened five hours ago. Http://www.flickr.com/photos/65690249@N08/6067030721/in/photostream

  • Answer:

It's definitely a first degree burn. There's no reason to think it will leave a scar. It's pretty normal for a burned area to not cause too much pain except when it happens. Because the burn sort of destroys the nerves in the area. Even in third degree burns the patients have way less pain than you'd think. I worked as a nurse for about a zillion years
