Im 12 and want to be home schooled? Please help!?

Hi! I know that your thinking im too young to have an account but im on my sisters account. Im 12 years old, seventh grade, living in New Jersey and would like to be home schooled. Reason- I have thought about this over and over again and made my decision. I Absolutely cannot concentrate during my classes because of the useless drama, cliques, dating, ect. Its really starting to effect my grades. Even in the Library I can't even concentrate. Gossip about every ridiculous thing is EVERYWHERE. Also, in math, i feel like its lacking because i've already learned all of this in 6th grade. In Science, My teacher always get off topic so i don't really learn anything. In Social Studies, The teacher goes too fast. I want to learn at my own pace. And in English, it seems like she just doesn't care. She doesn't care if people are talking, bullying, and she also isn't very clear about assignments. She doesn't tell us when to turn assignments in so if I get a 0, I wouldn't even know. I don't wish to learn the same thing over and over again because I could be learning so much more. I am worried about my future because my grades are starting to drop. I want to go to University of Columbia in New York to become a Doctor( Not sure what Field yet) but am scared that my grades won't be good enough. I want to start next year in 8th grade. I want to be home schooled until I graduate High School. Question- I don't know how to start? Like, I live in southern New Jersey and go to a Big Public School. I am willing to learn everything i can. In school, i am currently taking Honors French, Literature, Social Studies, Math, and Science. My parents aren't able to teach me as they don't speak english that well. I can learn by myself, I have money saved up to buy books and calculators and supplies, Its just that, how do i get started? To sum it all up, I just really want to GET OUT OF THAT SCHOOL and learn quietly and diligently by myself and be successful in life. 1. How do i get started? 2. What are the laws I have to follow in the state of New Jersey? 3. Will this effect my chances on getting into College? 4. How will i be able to take my SAT or get a Diploma? Thanks!:) Please excuse me if I got anything wrong as I still am very young!

Answer:
What you need to do first is speak with your parents about this. Without the support and help from your parents, it's really tough, because you're so young you don't really have the power to change anything yourself as far as legal stuff goes, but your parents can help you to get into a better situation. I'm not sure about the laws about homeschooling in NJ. I was homeschooled in Ohio. But the internet is probably your best friend at this point. See if you can find any groups or homeschooling networks in your area. I know there are many here. If you can get in contact with them, they cn give you a lot of valuable information as far as what you need to do- since they're already doing it themselves. Again, you're really going to need to get your parents on board for this. No, it will not affect your chances of getting into a good college. If anything it will probably increase those odds because you will be able to learn and explore at an accelerated pace if that is what you are comfortable with. I was homeschooled since the 5th grade and I got into a lot of very good private schools. There are so many options that you can look at for "homeschooling". There is the traditional homeschool, there is unschooling, and there is online schools. Getting a diploma is contingent on you being enrolled in an accredited school- if you are not, your parents can make you a diploma but it will not hold the same weight. If you are enrolled in an online school you will get a diploma from the local school system, but you can do all your work online as accelerated or slowly as you see fit. THere are lots of options. You will be able to take your SAT and ACT. Again, you need to network with homeschool groups in your area to find out what the norm is for NJ. Overall, I would say that you need to do a lot of research on what type of "homeschooling" is right for you, really talk to your parents and get their support and help, and look into networking with homeschool groups in your area which can be a greater wealth of information than any internet posting. Homeschooling is definitely not for everyone, but I found it to be a great experience and can't wait to homeschool my own kids some day. Good luck!!

Homeschooling is a family affair. Your parents need to be on board with you. The other responder had some good points but was wrong in others. Universities don't look for or ask for your diploma. They want to see your high school transcript and your SAT or ACT scores. A homeschooler's transcript is just as valid as one from a public or private school. You can find the laws at hslda.org (click on "my state"). You can also find support groups if you click on "support groups." The local groups are a great source for getting all kinds of homeschool info, from local laws, to homeschooling methods and options, to extra activities, to academic resources. You register for the SAT at collegeboard.org. There you choose your test location and date (usually at a local high school). Online schools are not homeschool. They are public or private schools and operate as such. Homeschool laws do not pertain to them.

Talk to teachers, and talk to your parents. You can't take the easy way out.

Well, here's Columbia's webpage on admissions for homeschooled students: http://www.studentaffairs.columbia.edu/admissions/applications/firstyear/homeschooled How you start homeschooling depends on your state; you can look that up and contact your closest local homeschool support group for detailed information on how that works. Local is usually your best route, because they're used to dealing with the laws and regulations pertaining to you. (It varies from state to state.)
