How do homeschoolers take tests/exams?

Do homeschoolers have to take state test?

  • I am planning on doing a online schooling for my high school years. My question is do you have to take the ACT and SATS and will I get a diploma?

  • Answer:

Yes, you should take the ACT and/or the SAT if you want to get into colleges. As to diplomas, it depends on whether you're using a curriculum or not. I use "Mother of Divine Grace" home study school, and at the end of this year I'll receive a diploma. If you're home schooling on your own, with a homemade curriculum, I think you can get a GED instead of a diploma.

Whether or not you have to take a state test depends on the laws of the state in which you live! ACT and SAT are not state tests, those are nationally-recognized tests that attempt to evaluate a student's prospective readiness for college. Diploma also depends...a lot of people are actually surprised to learn that you don't need a high school diploma, at least in the conventional sense that you're thinking about. You do not have to take the ACT or SAT ,but it is recommended because most colleges look at those scores. Most colleges find the SAT and ACT the second or first most important thing to get accepted. It all depend on what college you want to go to if you should take the test and yes most online schooling do give diplomas when all courses are completed. That to depends on what online schooling you take.

Do homeschoolers have to take state test? That depends on the state laws. Some state require testing others do not. Some allow you to take any standardized test while other require that you take the state's test. My question is do you have to take the ACT and SATS and will I get a diploma? The ACT and SAT are tests to enter college. No, you do not have to take either one to be homeschooled, but you will have to take one or the other to enroll in most colleges. As for a diploma, you make or buy one if you want one. After all, a diploma is just a pretty certificate with no value given as a token to remember the completion of high school.

The ACT and SAT are different from state tests. If you want to go to college, you'll probably have to take at least one of those. No, neither of them are required for a diploma. Also, (and I'm speaking for my state) you don't get a diploma unless your parents make/order you one or you graduate from an online school. (mine is going to be from a homeschool organization.) As for whether you have to take the standardized tests in your state--I don't know because you didn't say what state you're in. :) In my state, you don't have to. Go to www.hslda.com and look at your state's homeschooling laws and information. Homeschooling is much more flexible in most states--you usually don't have to take tests or get a GED. That's your choice! :)
