    first you need to get training,experience and build up a resume. agents only get paid if you work, not before. they won't wast time on someone with no experience. agents get you on professional acting auditions that you wouldn't have access to or even know about on your own. if you want professional, mainstream tv and movie work, agents are a necessity, not an option. without an agent you will only be doing amateur low or no pay work. when your ready for one, you can look on SAG'S web site for legit agents. find ones close to you that are looking for new clients. they will put contact info. on their web sites. you send them what info. they ask for. if they want to see you, they will get back to you and set up an audition. you will need to audition for them in person. make sure the places you contact are asking for submissions. most places don't read unsolicited mail.

You can't an agent until you have a few years training and experience acting in amateur productions. If you live in NY your best bet is to try to get into one of the performing arts high schools as agents often attend the school productions looking for new talent
