How can I face some of these acting setbacks? Serious help please..?
-
First off, I am a 16 year old aspiring actress, I have quite a bit of training and a little experience... I've been taking drama classes nearly all my life and this year (sophomore year) I took a prerequisite course at school (Acting for TV & Film) where we did everything from Production Branding presentations, commercials, improv & acting skill exercises etc. to PSAs & our final evaluation: a 30 minute sitcom show (the last two being the one's my teacher claimed I excelled in - I was blown away at the end of the semester when she announced in front of the whole class and our senior leaders that I always came in as the underdog and came out on top and that I was her "favourite"). I always knew I had an acting talent cause I always had the ability to empathize and always very compassionate. I wanted to be an actress since I was 9 and became very serious about a year ago. One of my friends from my acting for TV & film class' dad is a director and they invite me to some of their film shoots where I sometimes work as an extra and have like supporting roles. I have my resume done, I might have to do some final adjustments but still have to get my headshots done. But I seem to have a lot of setbacks.. my parents don't know I'm serious about acting (&I'm afraid to tell them cause they have high expectations for me and they probably won't take me serious, I have issues with my self-confidence and I am very shy - my shyness always holds me back at first cause I don't know , I'm not legal so I'll have to rely on my parents support which I'm afraid I will lack thereof, and I would like to do work in the US also but I have to wait till I'm 18 to acquire a dual citizenship, etc. I'm confused, stuck and don't know what my next step should be, please help :(

Answer:
The business isn't going anywhere so relax and be patient. You being 16 means you can do nothing without your parents permission and not being legal means no one in the U.S. can hire you anyway. So your first step really is to secure your citizenship which in turn ensures your legality to work in the U.S. In the meantime, continue taking courses, perhaps take up writing too. There are many other creative endeavors you can engage in while you cool your heels in the professional acting department.

Gray Area is SO right. You're too young to be talking of set-backs. Get a proper training, ideally a degree-level course at a major drama school, and join in everything you can - community theatre, drama clubs, etc. Good training will help you get over your shyness, and improve your skills. You have all the time in the world - just keep working on it. Also, get other skills which will help you to survive financially when you are an actor - very few actors ever make enough money to live on, so a second job which pays well is essential. Working hard at school will also reassure your parents that you're not going to starve to death through lack of income in a few years! Good luck!
