Is film school worth it?

  • I would like to pursue a career in film making. I follow the learn-by-doing philosophy and I think I have all the necessary technical know-how and more importantly the intuition. So far I've made two short films, both were well-received and one screened at a festival were it received a gold award. But this is not only an art form, it's also a business and a tough one. So having a diploma would be quite an asset esp. if I would ever enter the studio circles. But the tuition is so high, most schools charge 15-17 thousand for each semester. Some of it even exceeds the limits that loan funds and banks put on student loans(in my country at least) So should I go? Or should I take the Werner Herzog approach?

  • Answer:

I say school if you can afford it, but becoming mired in debt to do so will hinder you when you get out.Sounds like the Herzog will work for you.
