• i need to do a seminar on the roles of the women in the play king lear. I need three agruments and currently i have two. my thesis is: the roes of women within the play King Lear are defined by the hirarchy and power held by their male counter parts. my two arguments: - goneril and greganhave high statuses due to the power and responsibility given to them and their husbands by their father, lear. -gonerial,Regan and cordellia all express charcateristics found in their father, Lear. These characteristics help define who they become and how they act throughout the play and although each daughter is clearly different, each one helds traits found in the leader, lear. can some one plseeeee help!

  The beauty of King Lear is that its meaning drastically changes depending on how it is staged. Lear is supposed to be an ancient king, like 200 AD. So, him traipsing into his daughters' houses with 100 rowdy knights for months on end would be a gigantic burden in a time when starvation was a regular occurance and real danger. But, if you stage it as if Lear was Louis XIV with infinite wealth, it seems like the daughters have no legitimate greviences and are power-mad monsters. People overlook the fact that Edmund plays both of the bad sisters, implying that they both are willing to sell out (presumably kill off) their husbands in an effort to rule alone. There is not much to suggest that they were content with getting rid of Lear and Cordelia. It is also interesting that Cordelia lead the French military expedition, and lost, implying that women can't lead armies.
