Double majoring in college, is it difficult?

College - majoring in theatre?

  • i just finished my junior year of high school and i am thinking about majoring in theatre. i would like to know what the process is like to apply to a school where you would like to major in the performing arts? for theatre, do you need to audition? do you need to have a ton of experience? how much do they look at your school grades compared to your experience in theatre? what are some good theatre schools? i live in pennsylvania thankyou! i would love to hear ANYTHING you know about this subject! majoring in theatre has been very new, so i really don't know what i'm doing when it comes to applying for college!

  • Answer:

Usually, to apply to schools with intent to major in theatre requires an audition or for you to send in a tape of yourself performing. The best acting schools out there (Juilliard, NYU, Northwestern) require this. I'd definitely take some time to record yourself or to get someone recording you while performing. You don't automatically need a wealth of experience to get into a good acting school. At least try to get involved in your senior year a bit more, to the point where you're in shows, in a drama club, and doing extracurricular theatre work (working with other theatre companies, improv, etc.) I'd definitely keep those grades up, as they'll play a role in your admittance into these schools. Besides the schools I mentioned above, some other good acting undergrad programs are Carnegie Mellon, Yale, SUNY - Purchase, Rutgers, UC - San Diego, UCLA, and Emerson. Good luck.
