How can I write this monologue?
-
I have to write a monologue and we were all given different things, and mine was "I can't believe my friend..." so I want to write about my best friend that moved away. So I want to somehow incorporate: -that we've been best friends since 2/3 (she's a year older) and than all through preschool, (but she went to a different school as me all elementary, grade 8 and 9 and moved away in grade 10 (which I'm in now) so I guess say how we managed to stay friends through that? -that we promised to write, text, call and fb ALL the time, but slowly stopped till it was more of a chore or we felt like they were bothering the other.. Than just stopped. -that days, turned to weeks than months were we wouldn't even talk, or give each other Christmas/birthday presents -random memories I guess haha? We also had a club named Waab Wst Te haha :) -and I guess like end it with a powerful quote about friendship.. THANK YOU SO MUCH!! I have NEVER written a monologue and don't even know where to start! Thank you! :) <3

Welcome to playwriting! It's fun, let me tell you! :D Okay, so first there's some info that you have to decide on: 1. How long is your monologue? Length affects how much stuff you put in. If it's short, then you'll have to cut out some bits. If it's long, then you'll need to make sure it doesn't get boring. 2. Are you gonna perform it, or is it just a hand-in monologue? If you are gonna perform it, you can't make it too difficult for yourself. If it's hand-in, you write it for how someone else might perform it, to the best of their ability. 3. Is this going to be totally factual? Do you have some room to get creative? 4. A monologue is a distillation of the best parts of your topic. You do not have to start from the beginning and talk about how you met. You can start from the end, even: 'I used to have someone who held all my secrets in her heart, like a professional poker player. But she never showed her hand. I used to have someone who I laughed with and was so funny, comedians would hate her. But she was so nice, everyone loved her. I used to have someone who ..... (etc.) .....I don't anymore'. So once you've figured all this out, you can start to write it. Go simple. Don't be overly dramatic. Be truthful to your story, but don't let it get too boring. Also, don't forget, a monologue is designed to be performed, so don't be afraid to put in stage directions (Simple ones, not too detailed). And the end... I advise against a powerful quote about friendship. Something you used to say to each other, maybe? A wistful 'Oh well, I have a new friend now'? And for heaven's sake, PLEASE do not end with 'A friendship is like a flower. If you don't water it, it will wither and die'. PLEASE DON'T. JUST DON'T DO IT. so cheese *dies* :P good luck!
