What are the best cities for theatre?

What other cities should an actor consider besides New York?

  • I am an aspiring actor with a degree in Theatre Arts and years of training. I also recently entered into the Equity Member Candidate program with 30 hours left until I receive my equity actors card. I am straying away from New York City right now because of financial reasons, and because there are thousands of people flocking to New York to do the same thing and it will be harder to get your foot in the door. I would rather move to New York once I have established myself. I also am not considering L.A. right now because I would rather work in theatre and possibly move into film. I know L.A. is very big for film actors and not necessarily theatre actors. What are some other cities in the country where I can pursue an acting career in theatre? I am aware that Chicago, Philadelphia and Atlanta all have active theatre communities. Am I right, or should I really just consider going to New York?

  • Answer:

Kevin, Other than the ones you mentioned, consider Orlando which has opportunities in theatre, film and television. Outside of LA and New York, it is probably the best place for an aspiring actor. Break a leg!
