How long should a screenplay synopsis be?

Can someone give me some tips on my screenplay?

  • ok there are 3 things im worried about currently with my screenplay 1) Amounts of writing. Currently i have 12 scenes which adds up to 53 pages i have 8 more scenes planned, On average each page should be about 4.5 pages long which will take take the page count up to 89 in total i know the average amount of pages for a screenplay is 90-120 so im along the right lines but ive written my screenplay in a very space conserving way heres an example, a normal screenplay is written like John: Hello jack Jack: Hello John They hug. where as ive written it like this John: Hello jack Jack: Hello John They Hug. So im worried when my script is put into proper format, it will be too long, what should i do? should i worry? 2) Filling in. I Think ive planned all the nessacary scenes i want for the screenplay and im hoping to link them all up but then im worried again about making it too long But im worried if i have something major happening in every scene it want seem genuine and it wont flow How do i keep it genuine and flow like but not add too many more scenes? 3) camera/scenery directions. In my script i havent used Camera angles and/or Interior and exterier ive written in the lines what the scenery is, where it is and wht it looks like. Is this ok as my script is a spec script? Or will it seriously hurt the script? (P.S. i read somewhere that a scripts actual story is more important then the quality of writing) Please help thank you

  • Answer:

    1) From an Actors perspective i would say maybe put the Stage directions in bold. I did the Four candles scene from the two ronnies a couple of days a go and i was corbett. Reading it off the script in front of our company with the stage directions in same font was hell...I had to find my line which took longer than miming the props. But if the stage directions had seperation or bold on i'd of got it. I don't know bout the length as i'm not a writer. 2) I read something recently, It was called Gustav Freytag pyramid, Which shows what is apparently there are five points to a plot line...search it on wikipedia also, add a red herring in don't spoon feed the audience...Give the characters a conversation of non corilation for example this is a convesration that happend to me yesterday. Me: What is the difference between shepards pie and cottage pie? Aunt: Well think about it...erm what do shepards do? Me: Look after sheep? Aunt: So it's lamb. Me: Ohhh! Aunt: So that means Cottage pie is made of? Me: Bricks! they laugh 3) unless anyone gives you a genuinely knowledgable answer i would say if anything is deeply important then it is to be in a paragrah before unless necessary to timing then it should be put between the lines. But as a general concensus is probably for the director to decide. Hope this helps i may not be right but i tried.
