How do I begin a career in theatre?

Philadelphia or Atlanta to pursue a THEATRE acting career?

  • I am pursuing a theatre acting career. I have heard that Philadelphia has a lot to offer as far as theatre is concerned, and being so close to New York, it's an easy commute for auditions. It's also not as expensive as New York, but still has just as much to offer in the arts. I have also heard that a lot of actors are moving to Atlanta, but since Atlanta and New Orleans are now being considered the "Hollywoods of the South", I'm wondering if it's a good move for a theatre actor. I'm sure it would be a good move for someone pursuing a film career. I don't plan to pursue a lot of film until later in my career. On the other hand, I have heard that Atlanta has a lot of theatre as well. I've been trying to research theatre and acting in both cities, but I'm not coming up with anything. Is moving to Philadelphia a smart move for me, or should I set my sights on Atlanta.

  • Answer:

This sounds like "I want to be an Actor in NY but I'm nervous/lack self-confidence/don't have the money, etc.) If you want to be a theatre actor, you want to be in NY. Yes, you might find it easier in Philadelphia and eventually work your way up... or you could just find a way to go to NY. Remember Yoda: Do or do not - there is no try.

Why does it have to be a city? Realistically, for theater New York City is the best place to be. That's the heart of the theater district. Philadelphia is okay, mostly small theater stuff, but maybe enough to get noticed. I suggest moving to Jersey City or a town near NYC if you are willing to make the 20 minute commute vs the 2 hour commute in Philly. If you are moving to Philadelphia, I am guessing near South Broad street is where you ideally want to stay and apartments there can get pretty expensive. Unless you move to South Philly...I don't know anything about Atlanta, so I can't weigh in on that.

Process of Elimination

If I were you, I wouldn't confine myself to 2% of the acting industry. You should go to acting school, get an agent and then take the opportunities that are present.
