Who sculpted the statue of King Lear in downtown Chicago?

Anyone know any background to King Lear?

  • I'm trying to do some background research on Shakespeare's King Lear. I just wanted to know: What were his influences at the time he was writing this play? Any general influences, or ones specific to Lear would be great. Also where does King Lear sit among the rest of his works? Is it similar in style to any of his other plays? Any connections to comedy/ another genre as well as tragedy? I'd appreciate any help, thank you.

  • Answer:

He was influenced by a Celtic story I think. It is one of his most complicated plays - I've seen it and, my, it was hard to follow. It's very dark. He had to change the ending because at that time there was some problems with the monarchy or something and people found it too depressing.
