How to become a better actress?

  • I am 15 years old, live in Australia, and am a young aspiring actress. But whenever I audition for a theatre production or musical, I don't get the part? A few months ago I auditioned to be part of a big theatre production in a big city near my town.. I got into the play, but it wasn't the part I auditioned for. It was a part of some dance group that didn't say anything. Then today I auditioned for a community theatre production in the town I go to school in, it was a musical. I auditioned for a solo role, and there was 40 other people auditioning for the play. The casting directors told us that some people would have to miss out because there simply wasn't enough roles to go around. I had to say a monologue, and also sing a song. I sang Tomorrow from Annie. They called me up just then to tell me that I was unsuccessful and that they all think I have a beautiful voice, to keep practicing my monologues and improvisation, and to try out for there next show/s. I was just wondering, how to not get discouraged. I wasn't rude to them about not being successful, because I realize that in acting, most of the time is failure. And rejection, I was just wondering how to cope with this. I want to become a better actress so that I can get the roles I want. But how? I want to take classes but my mum won't let me cos she said I need to start of in community theatre before starting professional classes...but what if community theatre won't take me? I need professional classes so that I can get the roles I wanna get and make it to the top. Please answer, any input is greatly appreciated!!

    Yeah I agree, feel as if you are the character and even to help with the reactions of stuff, imagine what you would do and how you would react and then interpret that in the characters way. Imagine you were in the situation.

Simple tip: Feel the role. Feel it as if you're the real character. Forget your own self and live your role on stage/audition as if it were your own. Also, try to practice with your friends and ask them where you can improve.

You really do need to get into a good acting class - you're not going to learn and improve unless you do. Community theatres are great, but they normally expect their members to be constantly learning and improving, or they won't risk casting them. As for the rejection, my daughter is a professional actor, and she was advised by her drama school that for every 100 auditions most actors apply for, they'll be invited to maybe one or two. And for every 100 auditions which they actually attend, they'll be lucky if they win one. Being rejected, failing to get an audition, being criticised and having to live with that is an almost daily part of an actor's life. The only way to survive is to not take it personally. Even getting the tiniest part in the most low-budget production is a huge accomplishment - the average actor gets only 2 or 3 weeks' paid acting work a year - it's that competitive. To succeed, even in the smallest way, you'll have to have had the best possible training and the most relevant experience. And, of course, the most talent. Good luck!
