How to end vocal scratch?

How long does it take for them to rehearse a West End show from scratch?

  • Like, at the very beginning when the show is brand new. How long does it take for everything to come together before it opens?

  • Answer:

Well its a lot off things involved here but for a normal pro production off an existing musical (say a West End production of Cats) Id say the rehersal time is 6 to 8 weeks, thus the actors are expected to learn the lines and songs beforehand. But for a brand new show it could be a bit more inolved with pre shows at smaller locations but with the same cast so that they could work out any troubles it could be a lot longer than that. And if actors are jumping into an existing production theyre generally giving much shorter rehersal period, often like two weeks or so where its still operating at full speed. Johan.

It all depends on what type of West End Show. The last one I worked on (brand new, never been performed before) had a 4 week rehearsal period, three days tech and about a weeks previews before the press night. During previews, things can be changed, so there are normally rehearsals in the afternoon for the changes and a different show every night until the director is happy. That is average for plays. With musicals, it can be much longer. I have only taken over on a couple of musicals that have been up and running, but I believe the rehearsals are usually 6 - 8 weeks long with 1 week tech and a couple of weeks or more of previews before the press night, although I have heard that on some of the bigger ones, it can take much longer with two weeks of tech. I always wonder how anyone remembers what happened way back at the beginning!

its very complex and it depends on the company and the play/opera. the 25th anniversary of POTO was all rehearsed at a studio and not on stage until the day before the opening night. but in 83 (or roundabouts) when CATS was due to come out they practiced for a very long time because dancing had not been seen to that degree in british musicals before.
