I need help with a Romeo and Juliet essay.

Romeo & Juliet, need help with my essay question, im confused as to what it means?

  • This is the Essay question for English: "Each of the characters plays a role in the tragedy of Romeo & Juliet but the responsibility rests more with one than the others." Discuss this statement in relation ot the drama of Romeo & Juliet. I'm unsure on what im having to write my essay on, like, Do I write a paragraph about each characters contribution to the tragedy? Or do i base the whole essay on the one character, with each paragraph having a reason why it was more there fault? Ive tried analyzing this question, but im so confused. I'm aloud to plan the response and make notes on the ideas for the essay tomorrow, but im not sure what to make my notes on as the question doesn't make sense to me (: Best help, gets all points!!

    It seems to me that the focus is more on one character. But it's really difficult to say since I don't know anything about how your teacher thinks. If I was in your position, I would do the paragraph however I think my teacher is looking for it to be (given what little I know, I would say at the moment that it would briefly mention several characters, but then put a heavy focus on one. But you know your teacher far better than I do.) , then as I'm turning in the project, I would outright tell my teacher that I was a little confused about it but did the best I could

Probably the best way to structure your essay is to start off with a thesis statement along these lines: "Many characters in the play bear some blame for the deaths of R&J, but character X is the one who is most responsible." Then you do brief explanations of what characters A, B, C, etc. did to help cause the young couple's tragic end, followed by a longer explanation of why you believe most of the blame lies with character X. (Don't neglect to mention that some of the responsibility belongs to Romeo and Juliet themselves. After all, they do both commit suicide.)

I would say make notes on a broad spectrum of the characters involved who were key in the tragedy and give an over view of that analysis then focus on two that have the most influence/impact to the whole play (with reference to tragedy) This way you cover all possible interpretations of the question :)

You can build on the relationships that built up the tragedy. Juliet's nurse, the priest, and Romeo's cousin seemed to be the ones who were relied upon by both Romeo and Juliet and they also led to both their downfalls.
