I want to model and act but I'm new to the business, willing to travel?

I really want to model and act, but I want to go about this the right way not through a scam. I have a profile on model mayhem and have been approached by photographers and also been offered jobs but my fiance doesn't trust the site and wants me to go about it the right way. I almost have a college degree so i will have something to fall back on but I seriously want to pursue this. I am 5'2 so high fashion run way is out of my league and also not really something I care to pursue anyway. I would love to do some print work in magazines and just model some regular clothing and I would love to act as well. I was going to go to Barbizon but I hear they are a big rip off. Also I was going to do some TF work but I just read an article that says you don't even need to have a portfolio to get signed to a big agency. It seems like everything is a bit contradicting some say barbizon is great others say its a waste of money. I think I'll stay away from that but I would like to have some preparation for modeling and acting, I mean do agencies hire people with no experience at all, I have height working against me after all. I could really use some advice. I am moving to Savannah soon and looked up an agency there but I'm not sure if it is reputable or not, would it be better to try to get an agent in Savannah? Please help I really am passionate and diligent and will do whatever it takes I'm willing to spend money on classes and to build a portfolio I just want to know that it is worth investing in. Thanks so much everyone :)

Answer:
At 5'2 I think you should entirely forget about modeling and focus your energies on the acting side. Also, if it is Savannah, Georgia you're talking about you should realize that this is by no means a hot bed of the entertainment industry so opportunities will be relatively few and far between. Out of the way places are breeding grounds for less than reputable agents, agencies, casting directors etc because none of them can make a living or keep their businesses afloat solely by work within their defined descriptions. They rely on "selling" classes and photographers and whatever else they can get away with to willing, naive and hopeful would be actors. Before you take another step get down to the bookstore and start reading the many, many books on the subject of being a professional actor or engaging the industry as a professional. There are no shortcuts in this business but there are an awful lot of people and businesses who will be more than happy to take advantage of your lack of knowledge on how the industry operates. If you're willing to invest money on pictures and such you should be able to spend a few bucks on the books and materials that will guide you to informed decisions. Start with "How to be a Working Actor", use the search feature on Amazon if you like to find more books.

You will NEVER have an agent or become a working actress without experince. Audition for local theater plays, look at various acting schools that offer acting classes ( New Yourk Film Academy for example, has many different programs). After you gained experience, move to LA and start looking for an agent. You will have to mail your resume along with your headshot. You will have to do many showcases and seminars. Also, do you have an image? What types of roles do you see yourself playing? Are you the nest Megan Fox or Ellen Page? Can you sing or dance? Do you want to act in films or on stage? Acting is a very hard career choice. It will take lots of talent, hard work, great look, friends within the industry and luck.
