How do you get an acting job?

How do I get a movie acting job?

  • Hi. I am fourteen years old and I have begun to think of what I want to do when I am older. I have come up with tons of practical jobs but none have really made me as happy as wanting to act in horror films and other genres of movies. I can easily get to New York City. But can you even be in a movie there? Please, tell me where I can find an agent! I am getting a job this summer, so that I can start saving in case I need to move to California. I really want this so serious answers only please. Where can I get an agent in New York City? And how much will an agent cost probably? Thank you! Also, I have experience with acting because I take theater camps and have been in school productions, so I am all good with at least having some experience and being comfortable acting. Please help me! I really want this!

  • Answer:

Check with your local Film Office. Every town and city has one. It is the place a studio or film maker has to go to before he can shoot in that town or city. Find out who is planing on filming in your city soon and where they will get their extras from. Apply there. It is small, but a start. Remember, less than 2% of those in movies make their living doing it. Most have several jobs to help pay the bills. Most he work steady in films are extras and character actors, not starts. Stars come and go. It is the character actors you see for years and years.

I'm sorry, but you're going to need a whole lot more training and experience first! Theatre camps are fun, and a good start, but aren't really that much help. You'd need several years of regular weekly attendance at a good stage school or drama class, and lots of stage experience with you taking leading roles in a wide variety of plays. No-one ever employs beginners - they are spoilt for choice with thousands of very experienced actors fighting for every tiny role going in everything. You'd also have to be ready to do every sort of acting - stage, TV, movies, commercials, anything. No agent would be interested in you yet - they only want people who are likely to earn big money almost immediately, because they don't actually charge anything - they just take a percentage of your earnings from acting jobs which they found for you. The chances of you ever getting a role in a movie is remote - that's the reality. Most actors never, ever get a good role in anything, and get a maximum of 2 or 3 weeks' paid work a year. The rest of the time they work in ordinary jobs. Get into a good class and start learning. Good luck!

you will need to get training, experience and build up a resume before worrying about agents. you can find lists of agencies on SAG'S web site. agents do not cost. they only get paid if you get work. they get 10%. most all professional auditions are found through your agent. you and your agent need to be located in the same city. agents only send you on calls local to them. you will need to find agents that are looking for new clients. they will put contact info. on their web site. you send them what they ask for. if they want to see you, they will get back to you and set up an audition. you will need to audition in person a parent will have to do this with you and get an agent for you.
