How are my monologues? Suggestions?

I need help with monologues?

  • okay so i need to find two one minute monologues that are contrasting so im deciding on doing a more serious (dramatic) and a comedic one. Now the problem is how to find them, is it better to use those monologue books or actually find a play? And any suggestions will be greatly honored. oh by the way they have to be from a published play.

  • Answer:

You can use either, but I usually go with a play I know (or have a connection to somehow). One play I would look into if I were you is "The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds." It's more obscure, but 'Beatrice' has some great dramatic monologues that really allow you to use full emotion...or show off how well you can act drunk, depending on which monologue you use. Try to do something the directors haven't heard a million times. :) Break a leg!

Doing a quick google search on monologue suggestions is your best bet. There are a few different types of sites though- ones like this (http://www.monologuearchive.com/) which have public domain monologues in full text, independent sites that may or may not have been published (some people just write monologues for fun), and there are some that will tell you a monologue source but won't have the full text. Just be careful, as many of these are overdone for auditions- your best bet is to spend an afternoon in the library's play section and find a unique one! I've found some of my best monologues that way. (Totally understand there is sometimes not time for that, though!) Break a leg!

Find a monologue in a book or online... but then read the play. Always! I never understood why until I started holding auditions and seeing them from the other side. If you don't have time to read the play, you don't have time to craft your performance. You're trying to portray a character and you only have two minutes to do so... but you're only working with two minutes of material. NEXT! Occasionally all a CD is looking for is the right "look" - especially if it's a bit part with two lines... but even then, they want an actor that takes this seriously. This business is full of people who are dreamers - the actors who make it are the ones who do the work. In answer to your questions - you don't need to read plays to find the right monologue (although why not? It's all helpful); but however you find the monologue, you MUST read the play. There will be levels of context going on with that character that will make the monologue come alive. If I see one more actor "acting angry" I'm gonna spit nails.
