How to Get Auditions for Broadway Shows?

  • I am a trained vocalist with quite a bit of experience in performing and was just wondering what was the best way to get casted in Broadway shows? Would you have to live in NY?

    Agree with both answers below. You typically only get appointments if you have an agent. Bway shows typically have 3 or 4 large calls a year. If you're not equity, you can still go, but there's no guarantee you'll be seen. You have to have the time to just sit there and wait for hours and hours. If you don't get seen you can typically leave your headshot and resume. It will most likely go in the garbage, but some casting people do keep them on file for a period of time. Every once in awhile there will be some big open call for non-equity (like they did for Spring Awakening and the off-Bway Rent), but those are usually advertised all over the country so instead of the normal 200-400 people that show up for your typical non-equity things, you could get 600 or 800+--and obviously not everyone gets seen. Your best source for finding about pro auditions in general is Backstage.com and Playbill.com.

You need to live in NY and you need to have an agent. Occasionally, there are open calls but that's very rare. Also, you need to get into Actors Equity which is the theatrical union. It's more realistic to audition for off-Broadway shows which will get you exposure and help you get an agent. That agent will help you get auditions for Broadway shows (if they're any good, that is).

Yes you would most definitly have to live in New York you could get a call the day of that you have an audition and if you live in Florida, that would be quiet difficult.. First of all though you wuld need to get an ageant so you can be submited to castings for roles. Hope this helped.
