Acting gig with topless scene- should I do it?
-
For a while, I have been trying hard to get my first real acting gig so I can star building a decent resume. It has been very tough- partially because because of my ethnicity and partially because of my height. Although I am very slim, wear a D-cup and have had no surgical work done, I am only 5'2. I finally got a call back to audition for a small role in a film that is of the historical/documentary genre. The film is about early civilization and portrays a group's survival and way of life. The people running this project clearly explained to me that the role will involve nudity. They said that while there are scenes where my character is shown in full frontal nudity, most of those scenes will either not be in focus, or will be shot at a distance. However, they said that there would be topless scenes that would be in full focus. None of the scenes are sexual in nature but I will have to be comfortable with disrobing on set. I understand that in this profession, its something that people have to he somewhat used to and that's fine. I have no moral objection. My question is will this potentially help my career or hurt it? I want to get work that helps me build a resume but don't want to get stuck in certain roles/types. I would appreciate any advice at all. If you need more info or have more advice than will fit into this page, please email me at: [email protected] Thank you!

To be honest lovely, i wouldnt choose to do this one. I KNOW you are keen to be working and this is why you are considering it but this is where you have to be strong. If you were comfortable about it - you just wouldnt be on here asking what others think. Do you have any lines or are you just running around naked? Are you getting paid? Is this a professional job? Is there a contract? A pro contract? Does it say where this film will be shown or detail how much nudity there will be in it? Pro contracts are very detailed in what is shown so that it cant be changed when you get there. IE - you agree to topless then under the pressure on set they tell you to get all your kit off and worse... I dont think this is a role that will help your career to be honest. Ive faced the same questions LOADS of times especially when i was starting out.. I chose not to do them and have gone on to get decent roles in film and tv. So you might need a little more patience.... I DO understand how much you want to be seen to be climbing the ladder - but once they have you on tape naked - they have you on tape naked and there will be NOTHING you can do about it. Is this job backed by your agent? How do you know when they shoot you really wont be in focus or that they are not zooming in when they said you will be at that back of a long shot....? I have nothing against anyone who IS comfortable with nudity at all : ) I just hope you make the choice that in your heart of hearts you are most comfortable with. Go with your gut feeling.... Look for student films with interesting stories and start making a showreel that way. Daisyx

I would not do it because you will never get a respectable role because that's all people will see you as.

If you're asking on here, then your gut feeling obviously says you shouldn't be doing it. And also, imagine if down the line you do make it, and become really successful; Do you really want people to be able to see a film of you running round naked?

My dear, it isn't your ethnicity that makes it difficult to cast you, it is your height and build. Playing the ethnicity card is a cop out for no talent, so don't do it. I hope you have a sense of humor about your build. maybe you will find a role in a tv sitcom where your build could be part of the fun. But don't do nude work.
Theatre Doc
years ago I was in a serious TV film and played someone that due to being caught in a disaster was not wearing very much, just a few shreds of charred clothing. Less than a string bikini would cover. Okay the rest of me - head to foot - was made up to be grimy and bruised, but nevertheless, it wasnt wearing very much! This kind of topless/ disrobed acting is different from acting in a sexual/ pornographic thing (which I wouldnt go near with a bargepole) . If its serious, for a documentary or somesuch, and you are of legal age (there are a lot of young teens who post questions on Yahoo Answers, so I am just saying, I dont mean any offence) and for a reputable project, no I would not be worried, or consider that it would harm my career. Mine never suffered.
