What are some good serious plays where I could find a monologue?

Which monologue should I pick for my audition for an acting school?

  • I'm auditioning for the American Academy of Dramatic arts in about 12 days. I already have one monologue that I am doing, its a comedic one. But I need a dramatic one, and I can't seem to find one. I found a few that I liked, but it contains profanity, and I don't know if the school would like that. What do you guys think? should I pick a monologue with profanity, or keep on looking for something more classic? And if you have any dramatic monologue ideas, or know of any good dramatic plays, please let me know! thank you very much!

  • Answer:

What happens when they stop you in the middle of your first monologue, and ask to see something classical? I was at an audition where the auditioner did that (sometimes four or five times in a row) to every kid with a reasonable amount of talent, just to see who was taking their job seriously and who was a "I wannabe famous" type. I don't know any working stage actors who have less than eight solid, rehearsed, age-appropriate monologues they can do at the drop of a hat. Now, there's no way you can get up to speed in 12 days - but you better have at least one classical monologue in reserve (doesn't have to be Shakespeare, try Marlowe) - and you need to get your butt in gear on the contemporary dramatic. Also - maybe look at this as a practice audition for the next school you try out for, when you have time to do it right.

Well, I have TONS of monologue examples, but I can not give them to you. You have forgotten to specify whether you are a female or male, and what the age range needs to be. I think profanity would be good. Those schools are always looking for things creative and outside the box. Good Luck!!!

Pity. Some of the best training around is for Shakespeare. I think Marlon Brando did a good monologue in "A Streetcar Named Desire" - that would be a good one to check out. And, Jimmy Stewart did a good one in "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington." You may find a good one in Les Misrable. Knock 'em dead!

look for something more classic. Maybe something like: Antony and Cleopatra Coriolanus Hamlet Julius Caesar King Lear Macbeth Othello Romeo and Juliet Timon of Athens Titus Andronicus

None. A degree in acting/theater will only land you a job as being the caboose of the unemployment line. YW, Trae Tha Truth
