What to do when my tongue is bleeding?

When grooming a dog if the dog should bite the scissors or blades and tongue is bleeding what action do you?

  • I am back in groom school to further educate myself on styles and clips; although I know a lot about grooming I have been given a test to do about "Emergency Situations" and this was one of the questions. I have never had it happen to me before so I do not know and cannot find the answer on Google. I know if you cut a quick you add quick stop powder to it or cornstarch and if you knick a paw pad you run it under cold water till it stops or apply pressure but it is sort of difficult to do if it happens to a dog's tongue. Can someone please help me out and someone who works within the animal industry please.

    Tongues bleed allot, the only thing that works is ice....

You hold the mouth closed, that will stop the bleeding (the size of the cut determines how long to hold the mouth).I have groomed for 30 yrs and that is the method the vet told me about when a Kerry Blue bit the clippers. It worked like a dream. (dont apply a lot of pressure as the dog will fight it. just hold it gently closed and talk softly to the dog. If it opens the mouth to pant, just wait a second or two then do it again.)

If it's actually punctured, then call your vet. Otherwise, he will be fine. It may take a while to stop bleeding, but it takes an awful lot to do serious damage to the tongue. Give him an ice cube to lick. It will help stop the bleeding and help with any pain he may be having.
