My dog is physically getting ill from stress that we cant change... please help!!!?

a few months ago i met a lady that seemed very nice. we allowed her into our home and allowed her to become friendly with our beagle. our beagle is 2 years old and doesnt like strangers, but took to this person right away. rosy is normally a sweet chunky lovable ball of fur with my husband and i with a voracious appetite and until now her worst problems have been ear infections that we treated via the vet's instructions. on march 14th we received a phone call from this person accusing us of some things and since then has harassed us daily. she had repeatedly told us how much she loved rosy and that she wanted to have her 'spend the night'. on several occasions i caught her looking at my husband in odd ways or saying things to him or to me i thought were innapropriate but i (thanks to my inexperience) chalked it up to day dreaming or whatever. the day after the phone call animal controll showed up at our door and wanted to see our dogs. (we have rosy and a mastiff that we are fostering until my brother in law can get back on his feet) the animal controll guy took one look at our dogs, asked if we had any idea who called them and when we named this person he laughed and rolled his eyes. he told us we had nothing to worry about, our dogs were in terrific shape, and that everyone in the county knew about this person and her penchant for trying to take other people's animals. she also has put on facebook that she slept with my husband and that my father in law fooled around with her. naturally this person is not allowed in our home or on our property any more, however, because this person lives just down the street we are reluctant to allow rosy outside without one of us for even the shortest moment. the woman has harassed us continually via phone, facebook, and driving by our house so many times a day revving her engine so hard that she actually broke the clutch in her truck. we are in the process of getting a restraining order. while this has been stressful (to say the least) for us, rosey, my little baby girl, my little love, my only child (as i am unable to bear children), has truly borne the brunt of this. she went from having visitors every day, someone that would come over several times a day to love and cuddle on her, in a relatively calm home (we are quiet people and tend to keep to ourselves, but who doesnt argue once in a while?) to having 2 very stressed out parents, her outside time diminished almost in half because we simply cannot be outside as much as she would like, and a person that loved on her constantly besides mommy is now out of her life. my heart aches for her. i know how much she is hurting right now but i cant do anything about it. for rosy's safety and ours, this woman simply cannot be welcomed back into our lives. symptoms include: right after the woman stopped coming over she started pottying in the house, which she hasnt done in a long time, she stopped after about a week, constant itching her back, licking her private parts and rear end untill they are absolutely raw, pulling bits of hair out, chewing her paws until they are bright red and painful, she refuses to eat her dog food (hasnt touched it since march 14) and as of yesterday wont eat people food either ( she LOVES people food). when the symptoms started i thought and the vet agreed that it was probably allergies and we started her on benedryl per instructions, the itching seemed to go away after about a week so i stopped administering the benadryl. she still itches occasionally but not like she was. this morning i looked up to see her tearing pieces off a plastic grocery sac and eating them. i took the sack away and gave her some treats and then promptly called my vet. the vet told us even though we have an appointment for her shots next month on the fifth, we need to get her in asap so they can medicate her. we have No money!!!! and they wont take her unless we have the money with us. while i understand the unfortunate need for this policy, understanding doesnt heal my baby! i looked online to find homeopathic remedies to help sooth her until we can get her into the vet and ran accross several pages talking about administering St. John's wort (which i have here at home). however the only doses i could find were for 'large dogs' between 250-300 mg. she weighed 35 ibs before she went off her feed. i dont think that qualifies as a large dog. i cant break the pill in half because it is a capsule. i also am not sure how long it takes to take effect or when i will know it is safe to take her off of it. the massages dont work for her because they actually set her off itching again. everyone keeps telling us she will eat when she gets hungry enough... they didnt say she would start eating plastic!!!! please help! my baby is miserable and i dont know how to comfort her!!!!!

Answer:
The first thing that needs to happen is you and your husband need to CALM DOWN. Your anxiety level is raising hers to an insanely unhealthy level. I understand that this is stressful for everyone, but for your dog's sake, you have to keep your anxiety hidden from her. She's used to a calm house and clearly she's having one heck of a time adjusting to a different type of household. Secondly, head to Wal-Mart and get some lavender scented candles. This scent is especially calming for dogs and should help her relax a little bit. It seems silly, but it works for my pups during thunderstorms. Lastly, try giving your dog a massage twice daily, especially when you notice her start to lick or itch again. Have your dog lay on her side and gently apply pressure as your run your hands down the length of her body and legs. Gently massage her paws and legs as well as her thighs and back. Turn her over gently and do the other side, then stroke her head and ears gently. All the while say gentle things to her in a calm, comforting tone. Your goal is to help her relax in the midst of chaos. It can be hard, but this can all be done with no medication and very little money.

Most vets are willing to make up a payment plan. If yours is not, then check with another vet. If the vet thought your dog could have allergies, did he ever suggest changing food. Try and find out what she is allergic against and leave it out from her diet. My dog got itchy ears from allergies and has been just fine since i figured out which brand she was allergic too and i cut it from her diet. If she ate pieces of the plastic bag i would be very concerned. This could obstruct her stomach which can be very dangerous. If i was the vet i would say, bring her in asap so we can make sure she does not have half a plastic bag in her stomach which may in works case have to be removed during surgery (depending on how mch she ate of course). My one dog ate an earplug without me noticing it was gone but i can tell her stomach was a big chaos until she managed to pass it. It do indeed sound as if she is very stressed out and i hope you get your restraining order figured out. Try and relax as much as possible as she will feel and feed of your stress. Give her massage maybe. I would in any case try and work out a payment plan for the vet. The dog may still need tending too by professionals. I hope your ordeal will soon be over. And dont forgett to check if/what she may be alergic to

is there a park you can take her to and spend some quality time with her in a fresh enviroment? your correct about keeping the woman at a distance ... change up your dogs world as a distraction .. new toys ... new routine ... good luck
there can only be one!
I understand you are thinking this is all from stress, and may very well be. BUT, it also sounds like allergies, like grain allergies from grain found in dog food. Switch to a grain free food, like Wellness CORE is excellent (kinda pricey), Blue Buffalo Wilderness. There are many to choose from. Look at Petsmart or Petco. Try this, allow a month for improvements. make sure this dog is not in contact with anything outside. Would this crazy lady plant non-edibles in your yard for her to eat out of spite? I'm with you. DONT ALLOW THIS LADY ANYWHERE NEAR YOUR PROPERTY. Wow! They come in all different sizes and shapes, don't they? She's certifiably NUTS.
