How do I stop my grandma having to sell her house to pay for nursing fees? UK?
-
I live in the UK, my grandma owns a fairly run down house in a quite well off area. She has been having heavily subsidised home nursing until she fell over in the middle of the night on christmas eve and broke her thigh bone and has been in hospital since then. They are now saying that she must either go home and continue receiving the same amount of care she had before or what the social workers and hospital are advising that she needs to be in a nursing home where she can be given 24 hour supervision (should she need it) as often her falls occur in the night and home nursing does not cover through the night. However if she is to go in to a nursing home, which is ultimately the only choice, she must sell her house to pay for it, and these homes can cost a minimum of £600 to £850 a week. This means everything she has worked towards through her life to eventually buy her house must then be used for a mere few years in a nursing home before all the money from the house will be gone. If she didn't own a house, all the nursing care would be free so because she has worked in her life and saved to buy herself a house she is now losing out whereas someone who may not have worked and bought themselves a house gets all their care for free. This also means that my father will have no inheritance because my grandmothers money will all be gone in a relatively short amount of time because of the steep nursing fees. Is there anyway around this? bearing in mind, the house needs to be sold imminently, I believe they give you 12 weeks to sell the house and come up with the money. thanks if anyone has any solutions, doubt there are, just seems rather unfair on my grandmother and my father.

Answer:
I empathize with your situation but ever thought of moving in with your grandmother so that you guys can take care of her instead of depending on nursing home, this would save a lot of money. If it still doesn't work then why not appy for a grant or some kind of loans. I don't think inheritance matters as long as you are able to spent time with your grandmother, that's much more worthy after all, you can't bring your money into your grave. Care for her more before she's gone.
