How do I get grants/scholarships for college?

How can I please my mom...and get into college?

  • My mom recently heard that if students attend the community college where we live for 2 years, then transfer to the college of their choice, the tuition they pay for the community college will remain the same amount for their college of choice. I personally do not believe this because my mom heard this 'through the grapevine'.But even if it is true, I truly do not want to go to some community college for the first two years of my college education. Yes, I have heard of plentiful advantages of going to community colleges then transferring to the school of choice, but seriously, I simply CANNOT live with my family for more than a year after high school. My mom claims she understands but I don't think she really does because she constantly keeps pushing that idea on me. I mentioned scholarships and such with her, but she doesn't even think I am capable of receiving one. Not only that, but she continually pushes how successful my older brother is for getting a full scholarship at the most respectful military school in the country. She doesn't realize how much that affects me, but it does a whole lot. So lately, I've been really pushing myself. I've taken classes I know I can ace [my GPA is pretty good], I've taken up varsity sports, participated in school functions, volunteering, and I'm now applying for a job, and I'm working for a medical trip [which counts as 1 college credit] all by myself. This is on top of chores and such I do at home. Things my brother hasn't done; all in hopes that it will help me later on for school. I'm not doing this out of anger though, I'm just doing it for me, but my mom makes me feel like nothing I do is good enough.

  • Answer:

Seems like you're doing a great job...keep up the good work! Sometimes parents say things to their kids without considering the feelings they may generate. You need to explain your feelings to her. Remind her that you are not your brother and you need to be the one making the decision of which direction you feel is best for you. Don't be afraid to point out the extra work you have done either.
