Looking for good Japan Study Abroad Programs?

Anyone know of a good study abroad summer program in Tokyo, Japan?

  • Anyone know of a good study abroad summer program in Tokyo, Japan for around $5000? I was looking at IES' study abroad website at: https://www.iesabroad.org/IES/Programs/J… Though, I was told by my old Japanese teacher to try and find an alternative, because the site isn't honest about it being in Tokyo. Instead, the program is 40 minuntes away in Chiba Prefecture. Also, he said that the program staff are from a small low-scale college called Meikai Univ. Personally I don't know what to think. So, if anyone has been to an IES study abroad program or knows of a good study abroad summer program in Tokyo, please tell me all about it! :)

  • Answer:

Congrats on wanting to study abroad. Tokyo is an extremely popular place. I agree, most universities do offer their own direct enrollment programs. Sometimes it's cheaper than going with an American provider. Not all universities, however, have dormitory housing. Don't be surprised to live a good walk or drive away from your campus. IES is normally a good provider. You could also look into CIEE. I write for a new study abroad/travel website called Gulliver (http://www.gullivergo.com), which is dedicated to helping students go abroad. Check out these programs in Tokyo and neighboring areas (http://bit.ly/6736zm). Here are a couple summer programs (http://bit.ly/7fS3uc). If those options don't work you should check out Japanese Government Student Service Organization (www.jasso.go.jp). Once you figure out your program, visit our Prepare to Go section for more information on living in Tokyo and Japan (http://www.gullivergo.com/prepare-to-go). Good Luck and Happy Travels!

Personally, I never heard of Meikai University. There are lots of summer programs are offered at major universities in Tokyo and its satellite cities. 40 minutes commuting is nothing over there, School's living accommodation (dorm) is limited and mid city apartment is not so cheap. You may be able to find a school and program suitable to you by accessing www.jasso.go.jp (Japanese government Student Service Organization)
